Preschool Lesson on Job

Y’all. I’m not a good blogger, I’m really not. Think of me more as a children’s minister with a passion for sharing, thus the reason for this website in the first place. As I was working on curriculum recently, I realized there were lots of preschool lessons I haven’t shared! I’ve written several for our church and then spaced on posting them. Hopefully before baby girl #3 arrives in a few weeks, I can share these simple and easy lessons with you.

Today’s lesson is actually not a “go-to” preschool lesson. It’s about Job. Yes, “terrible, no good, very bad day” Job. I wrote this lesson last spring when our older kids were doing the “Wonders of the Bible” series and I adapted it for our kindergarten class. The story reinforcers with this lesson are fairly simple, but I did my best to keep this complicated Bible story as simple as possible for our little friends. Let me know if you’ve done a lesson on Job before and what activities your littles did!

Bible Story

Good morning friends! This week we’re talking about a guy from the Bible named Job. Job had a good life, a really, really good life. The Bible says (Job 1:1-3)

1 There was a man in the land of Uz whose name was Job, and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God and turned away from evil. 2 There were born to him seven sons and three daughters. 3 He possessed 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, and 500 female donkeys, and very many servants, so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east.

Job had a LOT and was obedient to God. Satan told God the only reason Job loved him was because he was blessed and had lots of stuff. God allowed Satan to mess with Job. God knew Job’s heart and knew he would be faithful to him no matter what Satan did to Job.

Satan took away his sheep, his donkeys, his oxen and even his children. Job was so sad. He cried, but never blamed or got mad at God. Then he got sores all over his skin and he hurt all over. Again, he was so sad and miserable. His wife wanted him to blame God, his friend told him he must have sinned really bad. But that wasn’t true. Job was just having a very bad day.

At the end of the story, Job and God talk. God is always with Job, even when Job doesn’t understand why bad things happen. Then God does takes care of Job even more than before. Let’s read Job 42:12-17,

And the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning. And he had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 yoke of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys. 13 He had also seven sons and three daughters. 14 And he called the name of the first daughter Jemimah, and the name of the second Keziah, and the name of the third Keren-happuch. 15 And in all the land there were no women so beautiful as Job’s daughters. And their father gave them an inheritance among their brothers. 16 And after this Job lived 140 years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, four generations. 17 And Job died, an old man, and full of days.

God is always with us, even when we don’t understand why bad things are happening to us.  He will never leave us and when we are weak, God is strong for us.

Close in prayer.

Memory Verse

Read the verse and then practice saying the verse together out loud. “My grace is enough for you. When you are weak, then my power is made perfect in you. 2 Corinthians 12:9

Story Reinforcers

  • Get Well Card: Give each child a blank card. Allow them to think of someone they know who is hurting or sick. Have them write a card to that person to encourage them and remind them that God is always with them.

  • Before & After Drawing: Give each child a before and after sheet. Remind them of what Job had before and after his “bad day”. Then let them illustrate how Job felt on each side of the paper. Allow them to share their pictures when they are all completed.

  • Talk & Draw it!: Ask children about a bad day they’ve had. Ask them how they made it through. Ask how God helped them through that day. Using lined journal or writing sheets, let them write and illustrate their bad day and how God helped them.
