For anyone in children’s ministry, this is a crazy week! Not only is it one of the biggest Sundays of the year, but you most likely have a crazy big egg hunt on top of that! My head is spinning this week, but I couldn’t let the week go by without a post. I want to share a few ideas and thoughts for families this Easter. (this post contains affiliate links)

First, DON’T shy away from a discussion about Christ’s death on the cross. You don’t have to go into graphic detail, but you’re children even at an early age need to understand that Jesus paid a great price for them and that He loves them so much. Remember, parents are the PRIMARY faith builders! Don’t leave these conversations up to the one hour of Sunday School a week, give it the time it deserves. I’ve recommended this book in the past, but “Everything A Child Should Know About God” by Kenneth N. Taylor is a great parent resource and an easy way to start a conversation on faith with your child.

I love Easter family traditions and making them Christ-centered is even better. At our Easter Egg Hunt this Saturday, we’re providing parents with “Resurrection Egg Kits” that they can take home and make as a family. I’ve attached the pdf below with the instructions we’re sending home, it’s a mixture of several versions. To make the set, the families will place each item in an egg and walk through the story of Christ’s death, burial and resurrection. You can get something like it here on Amazon, but it’s easy to make at home with 12 empty eggs.

Finally, a fun little tradition I like to do it is to make “Resurrection Rolls”. You take a can of crescent rolls, some butter, marshmallows and cinnamon-sugar to discuss Christ’s burial and resurrection. As the rolls cook in the oven, you read Biblical story of Christ’s resurrection. Then when the rolls are done, you open them up to find the marshmallow is gone, just like Jesus was gone from the tomb. You can find detailed instructions here on Around my Family Table.

Here’s the deal, you might not do any of these cute activities and that’s fine. But don’t go through this holiday and not discuss with your children the truth of Easter and the greatest sacrifice of all time. Your children deserve to know that it’s not about chocolate bunnies, eggs, or dressing up nice. They deserve NEED to know that Easter is about a God that loved them so much He sent His only son to die a painful death for them and then conquered death so they could be with Him for eternity. This might be the year their lives are changed for eternity. Don’t miss the moment!
